Shane Mosley will be the next contender.

Bob Arum, the founder and CEO of Top Rank Promotions, said that Shane Mosley’s group will have to sign final papers before the fight will be set. But the scheduled bout between Pacquiao-Mosley will be on May 7, 2011 for World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title fight at 17,000-seat capacity MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Shane Mosley (born September 7, 1971) is a professional boxer from Pomona, California. He has won world titles in three weight divisions, and is the former WBA Welterweight Super Champion. And he is considered the most famous among the candidates for the fight that includes Juan Manuel Marquez and Andre Berto, a World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion.

He (
Bob Arum) said that his first choice is Floyd Mayweather, Jr. but he shows no sign of interest. He added that he could have waited for him since now he is currently facing a charge for assaulting a security guard and was arrested in the hotel casino in Las Vegas which will begin its trial proceeding early next year.

Weigh-in

weigh-in - is the process of determining a competitor's body weight prior to an event, especially to ensure it is within the weight restrictions.

In boxing this is done one day before fight to know whether the boxer is qualified to fight with the other boxer in the same weight division. He does this by going to the weighing scale barefoot and without gloves. If he does not qualified he will be sanctioned and the fight will be cancelled. Usually if boxer does not qualify in the specified weight class, the quick remedy is to exercise in a steam room. But after all the effort if he can’t still qualify that is the time to declare that the fight is cancelled.

Boxing weight limits:
Heavyweight - over 200lb (+91kg)
Cruiserweight - 200lb (91kg)
Light heavyweight - 175lb (79kg)
Super middleweight - 168lb (76.2kg)
Middleweight - 160lb (72.5kg)
Light middleweight (super welter) - 154lb (70kg)
Welterweight - 147lb (66.7kg)
Light welterweight (super light) - 140lb (63.5kg)
Lightweight - 135lb (61.2kg)
Super featherweight (junior light) - 130lb (59kg)
Featherweight - 126lb (57.1kg)
Super bantamweight (junior feather) -122lb (55.3kg)
Bantamweight - 118lb (53.5kg)
Super flyweight (junior bantam) - 115lb (52.1kg)
Flyweight - 112lb (51kg)
Light flyweight - 108lb (49kg)

Philippine Azkals

Also known as the Philippine National Football Team (Azkals) is considered the underdogs in the ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup. But the underdogs scored high as they reached the semi-finals in the fight against the Indoneasian Team.

Although the Azkals didn’t make their way to the top in the AFF Suzuki Cup but there is a significant improvement on the Philippine National Football Team which was never heard since 1930’s. This team did a great job.

In their match with the Indonesian Team in Jakarta in Bung Karno Stadium, Azkals was defeated in the first and second leg of the semis. Keep in mind that this match was very important as the President of Indonesia and his wife watched this match together with 80,000 people. If this match was held in the Philippine probably the team could have won. But even if the team lost, it is still a reminder of the potential of Philippines in football.

To the government who should think that it is also good to invest in football, not just in basketball or boxing as shown by this team. Perhaps in the future people will be more interested in football and make their own kababayans proud.

My Birthday!

Born on December 17, 1978, Pacquiao is celebrating his birthday today at KCC Mall in General Santos City. He is now 32 years old. His birthday wish is to have more power in serving his constituents in Sarangani and maybe the whole country. The same wish was also given by his wife Jinkee not anymore on boxing because of his numerous achievements in this field. His political career has just started on June 30 of this year, listening to his speech he said his plan is to make a university and a hospital in their town which is very noble. But if he wants he can fast track his plan by spending his own money to build these projects. I guess even Pacquiao is saving these days, thinking that someday his money might be gone. Quite wise for a boxer. Some of the big people who attended his party are Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Con. Chavit Singson, Lito Atienza, Freddie Roach and Bob Arum. Also average fan of Pacquiao who attended his party at the mall and at the oval in Gen San feeding 5000-6000 people. Pacquiaio spent 3.5 million just for the food, the caterer said.

I wish you a Happy birthday! May you plenty of birthdays to come. And may all your plans come true.

If you have birthday greeting for Manny, please post a comment.

Life after Boxing.

I am not an expert in this field, so correct me if I am wrong. There are many consequences after abusing your body. In boxing to name a few are being paralyzed, Parkinson syndrome and others. Freddy Roach the trainer of Pacquiao is the best evidence. He is a boxer before in line with many good boxers during his time. The popularity easily fades, and as a consequence one is oblige to suffer what are the effects. Freddy Roach is now suffering a Parkinson syndrome, a medical condition closely related to Parkinson disease. Symptoms include body tremors, slurred or difficult speech, rigid limbs, facial immobilization, and other neurological problems. It is evidently shown when he speaks over his interviews with the media. Several others like Muhammad Ali suffered the same syndrome. In 1984, when Ali was first diagnosed with Parkinson syndrome. The disorder sometimes develops in boxers, because of the repeated blows to the head they suffer over a long career.

Jinkee, Pacquiao’s wife, said that Manny suffers severe pain on his side and secretes maroon to black urine after every fight. So there may be an impact of the punches of his contenders on his kidney, causing him to bleed in his urine. The mass won’t notice it because of the frenzy cause by the winning of the boxer, but he is left to feel the pain. Some of the expert in boxing said that he should retire early to prevent such conditions. But he said he will have three fights then he will retire. Looking forward, by then Pacquiao will have more money and the question of being winner will still be verified but that would make more impact on his body, making him more prone to the conditions mentioned. In my opinion, he should think about this. He may end up spending his money earned in hospital bills and there is nothing for him to prove because of what he achieved as the only boxer who has eight world titles. So it would be wise for him to retire early, anyway he still have his job as a Congressman of Saranggani.

The origins of boxing

The origins of boxing are unknown. Although the Greek poet Homer describes a two-person fight in the Iliad, it is not certain that such bouts took place as early as the epic poem’s setting around 1800 BC. Along with running, wrestling, and the use of weapons, boxing was part poet of a young man’s education in ancient Greece. Records indicate the sport was part of the ancient Olympics Games of 688 BC. Plato mentions boxing in both The Republic and The Dialogue Gorgias, and the poet Pindar elegized the Olympic boxing champion of 474 BC.

The Romans also embraced boxing, turning the sport into a brutal gladiatorial spectacle. Boxers of this time covered their hands and arms with a leather thong called a cestus, sometimes studding it with metal spikes. The combatants often fought until one was fatally injured.

Walang katapusang pasasalamat

This is a message of pacquiao to all his fans, posted in philboxing.com in his column named combinasyon.

God Bless Us All.

PACQUIAO-MARGARITO TOPS ONE-MILLION BUYS

By WIRE SERVICES

Amid his many troubles, Floyd Mayweather Jr. probably cracked a smile Tuesday because he remains boxing’s undisputed pay-per-view champion.
Mark Taffet, the senior vice president of sports operations and pay-per-view at HBO, announced that the Nov. 13 fight between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito sold 1.15 million units and generated $64 million in pay-per-view revenue.
The figure made Pacquiao the first boxer in the pay-per-view era to have a bout sell in excess of 1 million in three consecutive years. Pacquiao sold 1.25 million with Oscar De La Hoya in 2008 and 1.2 million with Miguel Cotto in 2009.
However, the number was under the predictions of Top Rank chairman Bob Arum, who was expecting no fewer than 1.25 million purchases. HBO Pay-Per-View didn’t release a figure until 10 days after the fight, which is unusually late, in an obvious effort to be able to announce as high a number as possible. Pay-per-view sales often continue to drag in for months, and, in some cases, years, though the final figure normally doesn’t change appreciably. The 2007 Mayweather-De La Hoya fight recently surpassed 2.45 million, Taffet said.
Taffet asserted that the Pacquiao-Margarito fight “performed exceptionally well.” He also said that since Pacquiao’s past five pay-per-view bouts have sold a combined 5.1 million, it is a “true measure of his pay-per-view superstar status.”But Mayweather, who is facing up to 34 years in jail on felony and misdemeanor charges related to a Sept. 9 domestic violence allegation in Las Vegas, continues to sell better than Pacquiao. The Mayweather-Shane Mosley bout on May 2 sold 1.4 million. Mayweather did nearly twice as well with De La Hoya as Pacquiao did, and his 1 million sales for a September 2009 bout with Juan Manuel Marquez were well more than Pacquiao did in two fights against the great Mexican champion.
Arum was expecting bigger numbers for the pay-per-view sales because of the extraordinary media coverage the fight received, pointing to publicity such as the Pacquiao profile that appeared on CBS’ “60 Minutes” the Sunday before the fight.
The Pacquiao-Margarito bout attracted 41,734 fans to Cowboys Stadium, which is 9,260 fewer than Pacquiao did for the March 13 fight in the same venue against Joshua Clottey. Arum attributed that decline to the fact that the $35 so-called “party passes,” which afforded fans a standing-room ticket, weren’t sold for the Margarito fight.
Pacquiao’s pair of 2010 fights sold 92,728 tickets, an extraordinary number for boxing. The two bouts in Texas likely generated a combined paid gate of approximately $13 million, given the ticket pricing structure for Pacquiao vs. Margarito. That’s only about $2 million more than the paid gate of $11.03 million for the Mayweather-Mosley fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Texas has not yet released the official gate report from the event. source: www.wavenewspapers.com

Pacman honored by House today

60 Minutes - Pacman (November 7, 2010)Manny Pacquiao: Story Bigger Than Boxing
by: Jess Diaz of PhilStar.com

MANILA, Philippines - The House of Representatives will confer the Congressional Medal of Distinction on boxing champion and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao when he returns to his law-making job today.

Majority Leader Neptali Gonzales II said yesterday the conferment ceremonies “will be our first order of business” in today’s session.

“This congressional award will be conferred by the Speaker. Then we will allow some time for members to congratulate Manny. After that, we will resume session. A modest victory party will follow in the evening,” he said.

Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. has ordered An Waray Rep. Florencio Noel, accounts committee chairman, and You Against Corruption and Poverty Rep. Carol Jane Lopez, a Sarangani resident, to prepare for a welcome and victory party for Pacquiao.

“We prepared a hero’s welcome for our people’s champion, a welcome that he deserves,” Noel said.

“It’s the first time that we have a colleague who is an eight-time world boxing champion. This is going to be a simple yet fun-filled and fitting welcome, and everybody’s going to be involved,” he said.

Noel said the celebrations would not entail any cost on the part of the House.

He said Belmonte has asked every member of the House to contribute funds for the victory party.

“Many members, aside from contributing money, promised to bring lechon and other food,” he said.

He added that House personnel would be treated to snacks of sandwiches and drinks.

Lopez said Pacquiao has been “emotionally touched” by the decision of his colleagues to contribute to the victory celebrations.

She said before the session starts at 4 p.m., the boxing champion and Belmonte would most likely meet with media practitioners covering the House.

She said the dinner-party would be exclusive for House members and their wives “as requested by congressmen themselves.

”On the eve of the Pacquiao’s return to his law-making job, Palawan Rep. Antonio Alvarez said the boxing champion should also be honored as the country’s No. 1 taxpayer.

“If the government is running out of awards to give to Manny, then it should think of honoring him for being the reigning champion in the individual income tax payment category,” he said.

A Bureau of Internal Revenue report last April revealed that Pacquiao paid P125 million in taxes for 2008, besting Forbes-listed billionaires whose assets dwarf his prize winnings.

“He’s not only the world’s pound-for-pound boxing king, but he’s also the country’s peso-for-peso tax payments title holder,” Alvarez, a member of the Commission on Appointments, said.

He said honoring Pacquiao as the country’s top individual taxpayer “would spur others more moneyed than him to knock him out of the BIR listing.

”BIR’s list of top taxpayers included some entertainers and prominent businessmen.

Ricky Hatton

Richard John Hatton MBE, more commonly known as Ricky "the Hitman" Hatton, (born 6 October 1978, in Stockport, Greater Manchester, England), is a British professional boxer. He is a two-time IBF and IBO light welterweight champion, having relinquished the IBF belt, only to move down a weight class and beat Juan Urango. He was the WBA Welterweight Champion, but relinquished this title on 31 August 2006. Hatton is also the former WBU, WBA Light Welterweight Champion and WBC, WBA, WBO Inter-Continental Light Welterweight Champion, and former Ring magazine Junior Welterweight Champion. After losing his last fight to Manny Pacquiao, Ricky has put his career on a long hiatus, with rumours of a comeback circulating the media since.

Born in Stockport, Greater Manchester, Hatton was raised on the Hattersley council estate in Hyde, Greater Manchester and trained at the Sale West ABC on the Racecourse Estate. He was educated at Hattersley High School. Both his grandfather and father played for Rochdale, and Ricky had a trial for the youth team. But Hatton found a local boxing club in Hyde, which he still trains at, and found he enjoyed the sport. Hatton's entrance music is the Manchester City club song "Blue Moon" as performed by the band "Supra." Aged 14, Hatton was taken by his uncles Ged and Paul to Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium to watch the second fight between Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank.Hatton joined the family carpet business on leaving school, but after he cut four of his fingers with a Stanley knife, his father made him a salesman to prevent him from losing his fingers. source: wiki.com

Joshua Clottey

Originally from Ghana, Clottey held a record of 26-1 and was just 25 years old when he realized he needed to relocate to NorthbetBoxing America in order to realize his dream of becoming a champion boxer. Following his loss to Carlos Baldomir - a man who would go on to become the undisputed welterweight champion, Clottey was written off by many of his countrymen, and left Ghana with only his training gear for America. After arriving and starting to train in New York City in 2003, Clottey saw his career take off, eventually winning the IBF undisputed welterweight championship of the world, after taking a technical decision over Zab Judah. After the victory, Clottey vacated the title to fight Miguel Cotto, and, while he lost a close decision, Clottey once again proved to fans and pundits alike he was one of the best welterweight boxers in the world, and an extremely exciting and engaging fighter for fans to watch. The victory proved especially sweet for Clottey, who lost the chance for a title in his 2006 fight against Margarito - a fight which he was dominating early, but ultimately dropped due to injuries. That Clottey is now fighting perhaps the greatest fighter in the sport - a folk hero and almost certainly future political leader, seems almost destiny. While the sports book may show that Clottey will probably not win on Saturday night, he will make it a fight, and most certainly further cement his legacy in the boxing history. source: boxingbetting.ca

Will Mayweather be next for Pacquiao?

PacMan: Behind the Scenes with Manny Pacquiao--the Greatest Pound-for-Pound Fighter in the World
By Keith Idec
The Record (Hakensack N. J.)ARLINGTON, Texas — Manny Pacquiao left the Dallas area Sunday afternoon knowing three things about his hectic-as-usual schedule.

The boxing superstar/congressman/singer will perform Tuesday at Harrah’s in Lake Tahoe, Nev., for a crowd of high-rollers. The tentative plan thereafter includes a similar performance Wednesday in San Jose, Calif.

Then he’ll head back to the Philippines, where the national icon has pressing public business to address when Congress there goes back into session. He has little idea who he’ll fight next, though.

Ideally, Pacquiao and undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. will meet in a May 7 showdown, probably in Las Vegas, to finally settle the pound-for-pound debate that has raged since their first round of negotiations began nearly a year ago.

Those negotiations ceased in early January because Mayweather demanded random drug testing for a March 13 fight. They didn’t fight Saturday night, either, because the enigmatic Mayweather simply decided he didn’t want to fight again in 2010 after defeating Shane Mosley very easily May 1 in Las Vegas.

Now that Pacquiao thoroughly thrashed Antonio Margarito early Sunday, HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg and virtually every boxing fan alive hopes a third round of negotiations commences soon. That depends largely on Mayweather, who might opt against fighting again until his legal situation, stemming from September domestic-violence charges, is settled in Las Vegas, where Mayweather lives.

Pacquiao prefers to discuss anything but his long-awaited showdown with the gifted fighter widely viewed as the only threat to Pacquiao’s pound-for-pound supremacy. The impossibly polite, perpetually happy eight-division champion got as close as he gets to agitated early Sunday when he was asked repeatedly about meeting Mayweather (41-0, 25 KOs) during the post-fight press conference.

Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer, was more than willing to discuss what could become the most lucrative event in boxing history.

“After this great performance (by Pacquiao), Mayweather needs to put up or shut up, or move out of the country,” Roach said. “Face it, Manny’s way above him at this point. I remember when (Mayweather) was ducking Margarito. If he doesn’t fight Manny, now we know this guy should retire.”

Mayweather, 33, claims he is the best boxer in the history of the sport. The native of Grand Rapids, Mich., usually uses his unblemished record as evidence that he is better than the likes of “Sugar” Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali and “Sugar” Ray Leonard.

His legacy would be weaker, however, if he doesn’t oppose Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KOs) at a time when they’re generally regarded as the top two boxers in the world, free to meet at a reasonable, contracted weight. Pacquiao, 31, gave away 5 inches and 17 pounds to Mexico’s Margarito (38-7, 27 KOs, 1 NC), yet still systematically battered and embarrassed the besmirched former welterweight champion throughout a 12-round fight that drew a crowd of 41,734 to Cowboys Stadium.

No other fight means more to Pacquiao, either, at least financially. He is expected to walk away from the Margarito match with more than $20 million, once pay-per-view numbers are compiled.

Pacquiao and Mayweather likely would make in excess of $40 million apiece if they fought.

“The Mayweather fight is obviously the fight that everyone wants to see,” said Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter. “If Mayweather won’t do it, there’s (a third fight against) Juan Manuel Marquez, there’s Mosley. We’ll just have to wait and see.”

BRIEF: Margarito will have surgery Tuesday to repair a fractured orbital bone around his right eye.

Margarito suffered the injury as he absorbed a brutal beating from Pacquiao. Pacquiao’s punches opened a nasty gash underneath Margarito’s the eye in the fourth round, and it nearly was swollen shut by the end of the 12-round fight. source: staradvertiser.com
