Amid his many troubles, Floyd Mayweather Jr. probably cracked a smile Tuesday because he remains boxing’s undisputed pay-per-view champion.
Mark Taffet, the senior vice president of sports operations and pay-per-view at HBO, announced that the Nov. 13 fight between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito sold 1.15 million units and generated $64 million in pay-per-view revenue.
The figure made Pacquiao the first boxer in the pay-per-view era to have a bout sell in excess of 1 million in three consecutive years. Pacquiao sold 1.25 million with Oscar De La Hoya in 2008 and 1.2 million with Miguel Cotto in 2009.
However, the number was under the predictions of Top Rank chairman Bob Arum, who was expecting no fewer than 1.25 million purchases. HBO Pay-Per-View didn’t release a figure until 10 days after the fight, which is unusually late, in an obvious effort to be able to announce as high a number as possible. Pay-per-view sales often continue to drag in for months, and, in some cases, years, though the final figure normally doesn’t change appreciably. The 2007 Mayweather-De La Hoya fight recently surpassed 2.45 million, Taffet said.
Taffet asserted that the Pacquiao-Margarito fight “performed exceptionally well.” He also said that since Pacquiao’s past five pay-per-view bouts have sold a combined 5.1 million, it is a “true measure of his pay-per-view superstar status.”But Mayweather, who is facing up to 34 years in jail on felony and misdemeanor charges related to a Sept. 9 domestic violence allegation in Las Vegas, continues to sell better than Pacquiao. The Mayweather-Shane Mosley bout on May 2 sold 1.4 million. Mayweather did nearly twice as well with De La Hoya as Pacquiao did, and his 1 million sales for a September 2009 bout with Juan Manuel Marquez were well more than Pacquiao did in two fights against the great Mexican champion.
Arum was expecting bigger numbers for the pay-per-view sales because of the extraordinary media coverage the fight received, pointing to publicity such as the Pacquiao profile that appeared on CBS’ “60 Minutes” the Sunday before the fight.
The Pacquiao-Margarito bout attracted 41,734 fans to Cowboys Stadium, which is 9,260 fewer than Pacquiao did for the March 13 fight in the same venue against Joshua Clottey. Arum attributed that decline to the fact that the $35 so-called “party passes,” which afforded fans a standing-room ticket, weren’t sold for the Margarito fight.
Pacquiao’s pair of 2010 fights sold 92,728 tickets, an extraordinary number for boxing. The two bouts in Texas likely generated a combined paid gate of approximately $13 million, given the ticket pricing structure for Pacquiao vs. Margarito. MANILA, Philippines - The House of Representatives will confer the Congressional Medal of Distinction on boxing champion and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao when he returns to his law-making job today.
Majority Leader Neptali Gonzales II said yesterday the conferment ceremonies “will be our first order of business” in today’s session.
“This congressional award will be conferred by the Speaker. Then we will allow some time for members to congratulate Manny. After that, we will resume session. A modest victory party will follow in the evening,” he said.
Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. has ordered An Waray Rep. Florencio Noel, accounts committee chairman, and You Against Corruption and Poverty Rep. Carol Jane Lopez, a Sarangani resident, to prepare for a welcome and victory party for Pacquiao.
“We prepared a hero’s welcome for our people’s champion, a welcome that he deserves,” Noel said.
“It’s the first time that we have a colleague who is an eight-time world boxing champion. This is going to be a simple yet fun-filled and fitting welcome, and everybody’s going to be involved,” he said.
Noel said the celebrations would not entail any cost on the part of the House.
He said Belmonte has asked every member of the House to contribute funds for the victory party.
“Many members, aside from contributing money, promised to bring lechon and other food,” he said.
He added that House personnel would be treated to snacks of sandwiches and drinks.
Lopez said Pacquiao has been “emotionally touched” by the decision of his colleagues to contribute to the victory celebrations.
She said before the session starts at 4 p.m., the boxing champion and Belmonte would most likely meet with media practitioners covering the House.
She said the dinner-party would be exclusive for House members and their wives “as requested by congressmen themselves.
”On the eve of the Pacquiao’s return to his law-making job, Palawan Rep. Antonio Alvarez said the boxing champion should also be honored as the country’s No. 1 taxpayer.
“If the government is running out of awards to give to Manny, then it should think of honoring him for being the reigning champion in the individual income tax payment category,” he said.
A Bureau of Internal Revenue report last April revealed that Pacquiao paid P125 million in taxes for 2008, besting Forbes-listed billionaires whose assets dwarf his prize winnings.
“He’s not only the world’s pound-for-pound boxing king, but he’s also the country’s peso-for-peso tax payments title holder,” Alvarez, a member of the Commission on Appointments, said.
He said honoring Pacquiao as the country’s top individual taxpayer “would spur others more moneyed than him to knock him out of the BIR listing.
”BIR’s list of top taxpayers included some entertainers and prominent businessmen.
Juan Manuel Márquez Méndez (born August 23, 1973), is a Mexican professional boxer. He is the fourth Mexican boxer to become a three-division world champion, where he won eightworld titles in three different boxing weight classes.Currently, Marquez is the WBA, WBO and The Ring Lightweight World Champion. He is also currently rated by The Ring as the number three pound-for-pound boxer in the world.
Juan Manuel is the brother of Rafael Márquez, who is a former world champion at the Bantamweight and Super bantamweight division. They both trained under Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain and Assistant Gildardo Marquez , who is considered as one of Mexico's best boxing trainers. At one time, the two were listed in Ring Magazine's top ten pound-for-pound list. They are one of four sets of Mexican brothers to hold world titles. Márquez and his wife, Erika, have two sons and a daughter.
An orthodox boxer, Marquez is known for his speed and counter-punching style. His fighting style was elusive because most of his fights, he's always rotating or moving his left hand and release over punches.

He is a former World Boxing Association, International Boxing Federation, and World Boxing Organization Welterweight champion. Margarito's reputation was tarnished by an incident in which his corner is alleged to have tampered with his hand wraps prior to his bout with Shane Mosley, which were found by the CSAC to contain sulfur and calcium which, when combined with oxygen, forms "Plaster of Paris". He's trained by formerIBF Super Featherweight Champion Roberto García. Antonio also manages IBF Lightweight Champion Miguel Vazquez. The Record (Hakensack N. J.)ARLINGTON, Texas — Manny Pacquiao left the Dallas area Sunday afternoon knowing three things about his hectic-as-usual schedule.
The boxing superstar/congressman/singer will perform Tuesday at Harrah’s in Lake Tahoe, Nev., for a crowd of high-rollers. The tentative plan thereafter includes a similar performance Wednesday in San Jose, Calif.
Then he’ll head back to the Philippines, where the national icon has pressing public business to address when Congress there goes back into session. He has little idea who he’ll fight next, though.
Ideally, Pacquiao and undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. will meet in a May 7 showdown, probably in Las Vegas, to finally settle the pound-for-pound debate that has raged since their first round of negotiations began nearly a year ago.
Those negotiations ceased in early January because Mayweather demanded random drug testing for a March 13 fight. They didn’t fight Saturday night, either, because the enigmatic Mayweather simply decided he didn’t want to fight again in 2010 after defeating Shane Mosley very easily May 1 in Las Vegas.
Now that Pacquiao thoroughly thrashed Antonio Margarito early Sunday, HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg and virtually every boxing fan alive hopes a third round of negotiations commences soon. That depends largely on Mayweather, who might opt against fighting again until his legal situation, stemming from September domestic-violence charges, is settled in Las Vegas, where Mayweather lives.
Pacquiao prefers to discuss anything but his long-awaited showdown with the gifted fighter widely viewed as the only threat to Pacquiao’s pound-for-pound supremacy. The impossibly polite, perpetually happy eight-division champion got as close as he gets to agitated early Sunday when he was asked repeatedly about meeting Mayweather (41-0, 25 KOs) during the post-fight press conference.
Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer, was more than willing to discuss what could become the most lucrative event in boxing history.
“After this great performance (by Pacquiao), Mayweather needs to put up or shut up, or move out of the country,” Roach said. “Face it, Manny’s way above him at this point. I remember when (Mayweather) was ducking Margarito. If he doesn’t fight Manny, now we know this guy should retire.”
Mayweather, 33, claims he is the best boxer in the history of the sport. The native of Grand Rapids, Mich., usually uses his unblemished record as evidence that he is better than the likes of “Sugar” Ray Robinson, Muhammad Ali and “Sugar” Ray Leonard.
His legacy would be weaker, however, if he doesn’t oppose Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KOs) at a time when they’re generally regarded as the top two boxers in the world, free to meet at a reasonable, contracted weight. Pacquiao, 31, gave away 5 inches and 17 pounds to Mexico’s Margarito (38-7, 27 KOs, 1 NC), yet still systematically battered and embarrassed the besmirched former welterweight champion throughout a 12-round fight that drew a crowd of 41,734 to Cowboys Stadium.
No other fight means more to Pacquiao, either, at least financially. He is expected to walk away from the Margarito match with more than $20 million, once pay-per-view numbers are compiled.
Pacquiao and Mayweather likely would make in excess of $40 million apiece if they fought.
“The Mayweather fight is obviously the fight that everyone wants to see,” said Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter. “If Mayweather won’t do it, there’s (a third fight against) Juan Manuel Marquez, there’s Mosley. We’ll just have to wait and see.”
